John Dowland: Joy and Sorrow

Ex Corde Vocal Ensemble and Matthew Wadsworth (lute) (‘his intensely focused playing flows direct from the heart’ Classic FM Magazine) team up to mark the 400th anniversary of John Dowland. Lute songs, including Come again sweet love, Can she excuse my wrongs, Flow my tears, are set alongside similarly contrasting pieces by William Byrd, including his penitential motet Ne irascaris and madrigal When I was otherwise. The programme also features the premiere of Humble Verses, a striking new work by Christopher Fox with text by female contemporary of Byrd and Dowland, Emilia Lanier.

Christmas in Renaissance Rome

part of the York Early Music Christmas Festival
Ex Corde Vocal Ensemble and the York Waits join forces to explore Christmas music associated with Renaissance Rome, combining large-scale sacred polyphony with traditional Italian seasonal songs and instrumental music. Selections from two Christmas masses frame this concert: Arcadelt's Missa Noe Noe with its motet model by Jean Mouton, and Palestrina's Missa Hodie Christus natus est, along with its motet model. Alongside these are motets by de Silva, Victoria, lullabies and instrumental pieces reflecting both formal liturgical practice and more domestic Christmas traditions.
